Preparing Your Child for Their First Visit
Preparing your child for their first visit to our Raleigh dentist office is easy. Here are some tips to help make the experience positive:
-
Read books about dental visits: Children’s books about going to the dentist can help familiarize your child with what to expect. Our office can recommend some great titles!
-
Use child-friendly terminology: We use simple, non-threatening language to describe dental procedures, and you can too! For instance:
- The dental mirror resembles a “spoon” – you could practice looking at your child’s teeth with a spoon at home
- Polishing is often described as “tickling” the teeth
- “Counting teeth” is what we call our examination
- Taking “pictures” is how we describe X-rays
-
Play pretend dentist: Take turns being the dentist and the patient with your child. This can make the real visit seem less intimidating.
-
Talk positively about the dentist: Children pick up on your attitudes, so express positive feelings about dental visits.
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, children who are properly prepared for dental visits typically experience less anxiety and develop more positive associations with dental care.
Our Kid-Friendly Waiting Area
Your child’s comfort begins the moment you enter our Raleigh dentist office. We’ve designed our waiting area with young patients in mind:
-
Dedicated play area: Our waiting room features an ideal spot for little ones with engaging toys and activities.
-
Entertainment options: We have a large screen TV playing kid-friendly movies to keep children entertained while waiting.
-
“Healthy Smile Club” board: Located in the play area, this special board is full of pictures of all the kids who are cavity-free! Your child’s picture could be featured there too.
-
Monthly drawings: Children who are cavity-free will be entered in a monthly drawing for a $30 gift card to a popular family entertainment venue!
-
Friendly stuffed animal mascots: When your child is called back, they’ll get the opportunity to meet one of our large stuffed animals. We have a monthly drawing for them, and every child that comes in for a visit during that month gets entered into the drawing. The kids get so excited to enter the drawings and visit the stuffed animal in the hallway. At night, we let the stuffed animal look out the window, so don’t forget to wave as you drive by the office!
Our Raleigh dentist team has created this welcoming environment based on research showing that positive distractions can significantly reduce dental anxiety in children, according to the Journal of Dental Hygiene.
What to Expect During the First Appointment
The most important part of your child’s first visit to our Raleigh dentist office is to help them become comfortable with the staff and have a positive experience. We will accommodate the appointment according to how your child responds to the new situation:
-
Introduction to the dental chair: We’ll show your child how the chair goes up and down and what the light looks like when we turn it on.
-
Comfort measures: We offer sunglasses to wear and have TVs mounted on the ceiling with child-friendly channels to watch during the visit.
-
Educational conversation: The dental assistant or hygienist will visit with you and your child about:
- Proper brushing and flossing techniques
- Recommended frequency of oral hygiene practices
- Dietary habits that affect dental health
-
Gentle examination: Don’t worry if your child does not fully cooperate during their first visit—this is completely normal! We will, at the very minimum, perform a quick exam to ensure everything is healthy.
-
Additional procedures as appropriate: For children who are ready, we may also:
- Polish their teeth (what we call “tickling” the teeth)
- Take digital X-rays (all of our rooms are equipped with digital X-ray technology, which means faster images with minimal radiation)
- Apply a fluoride treatment to help keep their teeth strong and healthy
The American Dental Association recommends that a child’s first dental visit focus more on getting acquainted with the dental environment rather than completing extensive procedures.
Making Dental Visits Fun
At Wainright and Wassel, DDS, your Raleigh dentist team works hard to ensure children have such a great experience that they actually look forward to their next appointment!
-
Reward system: At the conclusion of the appointment, your child will be able to choose a prize from our treasure chest.
-
Take-home goodies: Each child receives a new toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss to take home, reinforcing good oral hygiene habits.
-
Positive reinforcement: Our entire team uses praise and encouragement throughout the visit to build your child’s confidence.
-
Child-centered approach: We move at your child’s pace and respect their comfort level, building trust with each visit.
Studies published in the Journal of Dental Research show that positive early dental experiences significantly increase the likelihood of children maintaining regular dental visits throughout adolescence and into adulthood.
When to Schedule Your Child’s First Dental Visit
Following guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association, we recommend:
-
First visit by first birthday: Ideally, children should have their first dental visit when their first tooth appears or by their first birthday, whichever comes first.
-
Definitely by age 3: If you haven’t brought your child in earlier, age 3 is the latest recommended time to start regular dental visits.
-
Regular six-month checkups: After the initial visit, we recommend bringing your child in every six months for preventive care.
Early dental visits allow your Raleigh dentist to:
- Monitor dental development
- Catch potential issues before they become problems
- Provide guidance on proper oral hygiene techniques
- Help your child develop comfort with dental visits
Tips for Maintaining Your Child’s Oral Health at Home
Between visits to your Raleigh dentist, here are some ways to keep your child’s smile healthy:
-
Start early: Clean your baby’s gums with a soft cloth even before teeth erupt.
-
Use the right amount of toothpaste:
- Under 3 years: Use a rice-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste
- 3-6 years: Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste
-
Assist with brushing: Children typically need help brushing properly until around age 7-8.
-
Limit sugary drinks and snacks: Offer water instead of juice or soda, and choose healthy snacks like cheese, yogurt, and crunchy vegetables.
-
Make oral hygiene fun: Use timers, songs, or apps designed to make brushing entertaining.
-
Lead by example: Let your child see you taking good care of your own teeth.
