Denture Types and Functionality

Dentures are available in a variety of formats. Advancements in technology and materials allow for the following options.

Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures are removable dental appliances that rest on the gums to replace missing teeth. They have been a popular choice for decades due to their affordability and accessibility. These dentures are made from acrylic and are designed to fit comfortably over the gums, providing a natural look and improving the wearer’s ability to speak and chew. Traditional dentures, however, do have some drawbacks. Since they are not anchored to the jawbone, they can sometimes slip or shift, leading to discomfort and limited stability, particularly when eating or speaking.

For individuals who choose traditional dentures, it is important to maintain proper hygiene by brushing the gums and the dentures daily, soaking them in a cleaning solution when not in use, and visiting the dentist regularly for adjustments to ensure a proper fit as the shape of the gums changes over time

Implant-retained dentures

Implant-retained dentures combine the benefits of dental implants with the flexibility of traditional dentures. They are held securely in place using a few dental implants that are surgically placed into the jawbone. Unlike traditional dentures, which rely on adhesives, implant-retained dentures “snap” onto the implants, providing increased stability and improved chewing power.

This option is often chosen by patients who experience frequent issues with denture movement or discomfort but do not want to commit to fixed dentures. Implant-retained dentures can be removed easily for cleaning, making them a convenient and effective solution for those looking for a more secure fit. They also help prevent bone loss since the implants stimulate the jawbone similarly to natural teeth.

Implant Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are a more permanent solution compared to implant-retained dentures. These dentures are attached to dental implants, which are fused directly to the jawbone, providing exceptional stability and comfort. Implant-supported dentures can be either fixed or removable, depending on the patient’s preferences and the condition of their jawbone.

One popular option is the “All-on-4” method, which uses four implants to support a full arch of teeth, providing a fixed solution that mimics the look and function of natural teeth. Implant-supported dentures do not require adhesive, and patients can enjoy a greater range of foods and activities without worrying about their dentures shifting or causing discomfort.
