When your child is around 6 years of age, their 6 year molars will erupt behind their 2 year molars. When this happens, your child may experience a few uncomfortable symptoms such as headaches, ear pain, and jaw pain. Fortunately, salt water rinses and over-the-counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen can help.
During this period of your child’s life, it’s essential that you educate them on proper oral hygiene. Help them get into the habit of waking up each morning and thoroughly brushing and flossing their teeth. Tell them that they cannot go to bed at night without brushing and flossing their teeth for the second time.
Instilling healthy oral hygiene in your child will reduce their risk of cavities. Believe it or not, cavities can develop in 6 year old molars. This may be because children do not brush their teeth correctly or frequently enough. They may also be eating and drinking too many sugary foods and beverages. In addition, children may have soft enamel and not be reaching all of their teeth when they brush.
If you believe your child may have a cavity, it’s important to schedule an appointment at our office right away. We’ll evaluate their mouth and let you know whether cavity treatment is necessary. By taking your child to our office every 6 months or so, your child can prevent issues such as cavities and learn how to achieve optimal oral health.
